Alberobello and the magic of the trulli

If you are in Puglia, and you are enjoying a magnificent stay in the Itria Valley, a visit to the splendid Trulli of Alberobello is a must: these exceptional conical buildings, a heritage recognized by UNESCO in 1966, are a well-known tourist attraction. The trullo, in fact, has always been one of the most typical expressions of the peasant soul of Puglia.

Its architecture revolves around the grafting of a conical shape on an underlying structure that is usually cubic, proposing, among other things, the unique geometry of the so-called false dome, obtained by superimposing concentric rows of “chiancarelle” that gradually get closer to the center, the key to the whole ensemble, underlined by the presence of the typical cuspidate element which ends at the top with a sphere or with a pinnacle of various shapes. On the cones you often find , traced with lime milk, sacred and profane designs, stars, crosses, crescents and astral symbols. The entrances to the oldest trulli are distinguished by the presence of a stone lintel with an overflow arch. The significant parts of the trullo building in Alberobello and its surroundings are basically two: the central square space, covered by the false dome and some lateral spaces that face directly onto the central compartment.
And that's how it is, from Alberobello to Locorotondo, from Martina Franca to Cisternino, every day the Mediterranean light makes the Valle d'Itria the immobile dream of a nature still on a human scale.

In addition to a walk through the trulli of the historic center, we recommend a visit to the "Trullo Sovrano", the highest existing and the only two-storey one, which today hosts events and concerts, and to the Church of Sant'Antonio also with the shape of trullo.

Alberobello it is a maze of alleys, with more than 1000 trulli, you will feel like walking in another world and another time. The tradition of this area of Puglia lives again every day with the ancient and wise gestures of the women who still work the lace, weave by hand and prepare “orecchiette” and fresh pasta. A fairytale landscape!

THE DISTRICTS OF THE CITY OF ALBEROBELLO
The city of Alberobello is divided into two districts which are called Rione Monti and Aja Piccola

RIONE MONTI
This is what is often seen in postcards, with many dense thick trulli, to the delight of children who think they are in the land of the elves or the Smurfs depending on their imagination! Do you think that in this district alone there are more than a thousand trulli! In Rioni Monti it is worth visiting the Siamese Trullo: two trulli in one, just like two Siamese twins! A walk in the Monti district will transport you into a fairy-tale dimension: do not hesitate to put the map aside and to walk aimlessly among the trulli!

AJA PICCOLA
The other district of Alberobello is called Aja Piccola. It is not studded with trulli, but there are some museums and buildings that should be visited before ending your tourist visit to Alberobello.

- Casa D’Amore: it is not a trullo and was built - unlike local customs - with the use of lime, therefore not dry! It houses the tourist office.
- Casa Pezzolla: the local museum is hosted by Casa Pezzolla. Casa Pezzolla was the home of Dr. Giacomo Pezzolla, who gave it its name, and who, in the 18th century, was the personal doctor of the D'Aragona family. Casa Pezzolla is a complex of 15 communicating trulli, truly unique and singular even in that of Alberobello!
- Palazzo Acquaviva: it was the summer residence of the Acquaviva Aragona family. Count GianGirolamo loved to take refuge here to devote himself to hunting.
- Trullo Sovrano: beautiful, two-story, furnished inside with objects and furnishings of the past. It helps us to rediscover the lifestyle and habits of our ancestors.
- Basilica of SS. Cosma and Damiano, it is worth a visit, and it is right behind the Sovereign trullo
