Vieste, one of the most fascinating destinations in Puglia

This town, formerly called Apeneste, magical and mysterious, romantic and fascinating, offers a picturesque ancient village, golden sand beaches, clear sea, sea caves, inlets and islets, breathtaking views and the lush nature of the Gargano National Park. That is all that is needed to transform a stay into a regenerating experience for the body and mind

Wonderfully overlooking the Adriatic Sea, from the top of the Gargano promontory, Vieste proclaims itself one of the most fascinating destinations in Puglia. It is a bit like a magician's cylinder: suddenly an attraction appears that leaves you speechless, so it happens that walking through the streets of the historic center, you can come across corners that seem to be drawn from the most evocative illustrations, or you are overlooked by the Castle and the Cathedral.

Its center unravels between two points: to the east, the ancient part is limited by the Punta di San Francesco, which must be absolutely seen, while to the north, the newer area that started to evolve towards the 1800s, from the Punta di Santa Croce . In the middle is the Marina Piccola.

This small peninsula is the end of the rock on which the medieval district stands, inhabited since ancient times because of its strategic position and its powerful natural bastion that made it difficult to assault it by sea. The name of the peninsula is linked, in fact, to that of the church and monastery that rise at the end of the peninsula. From Via San Francesco, looking at the church, on the left we find the bay of Marina Piccola and the islet of Sant'eufemia which houses the lighthouse, on the right a staircase that takes us to a beautiful cliff with trebuchet and a magnificent view of the historic center overlooking the sea.

In short, Vieste is a bit like a magician's cylinder: suddenly an attraction that leaves you speechless, so it happens that walking through the streets of the historic center, you can come across corners that seem to be made from the most suggestive illustrations, or you are overlooked by the Castle and the Cathedral.

Along the southern coast, which connects Mattinata to Vieste, along stretches of uphill road and immersed in the greenery of the Gargano National Park, you can witness one of the most beautiful spectacles of nature: white cliffs, sunny and deserted bays, blue sea, sea caves, woods of Mediterranean scrub as well as the beautiful Pizzomunno faraglione which flings its white bulk towards the blue sky.

To visit without a doubt La Salata, a paleocritian necropolis located east of the city, the sanctuary of Santa Maria di Merino and the sea caves, with imaginative names (Grotta Sfondata, Grotta dei due Occhi, Grotta Rotonda, Grotta dei Pipistrelli, Grotta del Serpente , Grotta Viola and Grotta Smeralda), in addition to the many rock formations that have become famous for their shape, such as Pizzomunno and the Arco di San Felice.

Unforgettable....
....... an unforgettable visit to one of the many trabucchi that you can meet along your way. These rudimentary and atypical fishing tools, built with empirical techniques by simple men, today seem to want to tell us modern men the atavistic poetry of a time now dissolved. Unfortunately many trebuchets have been destroyed over time, but some remain in good condition. In addition to that of San Francesco, we suggest some trabucchi that you can visit:

Vieste - La ripa
Vieste - Isola di Santa Eufemia
Vieste - Lungomare C.Colombo - Visitabile/ Pubblico
Vieste - Lungomare Europa zona S.Lorenzo - Visitabile / Pubblico
Vieste - Litoranea Vieste - Peschici km 1, c/o spiaggia di Punta Lunga
Vieste - Località Molinella

You choose Vieste as a tourist destination not only for the sea but also for the good Apulian food, which in this city, home of fishermen, is declined in the infinite shades of fish.
