Our walking tour begins in the heart of the modern city, near Teatro Petruzzelli, the largest theater in Bari and one of the most important in Italy. Here, our guide will introduce you to the history of the city before we head into its fascinating old town.
We will walk through Piazza del Ferrarese, one of the liveliest squares in Bari, and continue to the nearby Piazza Mercantile, historically the social and commercial hub of the city. Here we will stop to admire the Column of Justice, once used to punish insolvent debtors.
We will then head to Bari’s most important religious symbol: the Basilica of Saint Nicholas. This extraordinary example of Apulian Romanesque architecture houses the relics of the Saint, venerated by both Catholics and Orthodox Christians. After a brief visit inside, we will continue our walk toward the majestic Cathedral of San Sabino, another Romanesque gem, famous for the summer solstice phenomenon.
After a stop to admire the imposing Swabian Castle, with its massive walls originally built by the Normans and later reinforced by Frederick II, we’ll delve into the picturesque alleys of Old Bari. Here you can admire the famous “Orecchiette Street”, where local women prepare fresh handmade pasta, a daily ritual that fascinates visitors.
